The sustainability research area focuses on the in-service performance of materials and structures. Its research activities are based on an approach that combines the experimental characterization of damage mechanisms, particularly fatigue, with the development of advanced modelling tools.

Research topics :
- Impact of manufacturing processes (welding, machining, forging, shot peening, casting, additive manufacturing, thermochemical treatments, etc.) on the fatigue performance of components and structures.
- Role of microstructural heterogeneities (porosity, shrinkage defects, inclusions, etc.) and the associated damage mechanisms.
- Role of surface integrity (work hardening, residual stresses, surface roughness, property gradients, etc.) and the associated damage mechanisms.
- Modelling and characterization of fatigue durability under complex loading conditions (multiaxial loading, loading gradients, notches).
- Development of innovative characterization methods (vibration fatigue, in situ testing, etc.).
- Characterization and modelling of scale effects on fatigue damage (experimental investigations and modelling across multiple scales).
- Durability of composite materials (impact, fatigue) and metallic materials.
